It rained here in Central Virginia today. In spots. Oh, not enough to make a dent in the heat, nor enough to keep my Hibiscus from keeling over, nor enough to ensure that one stray spark won’t burn down the entire county. Just enough, however, to create a lot of steam. It’s like a sauna that you can’t walk away from.

Let me tell you about my day. At 5:30, I wake up with swelled up left eye (no, Mr. Bee did not clock me, he would never, ever do such a thing) from my mold allergy. At 9:00, I’m eating a bagel at my desk when the permanent crown I got a little over a week ago…fell out. So much for permanent. At 9:30, I get an email from an operations department telling me I fucked something up. Turns out I didn’t, they just can’t read. At 11:30, a co-worker says “hey, wanna order chinese delivery?”

“Sure!” I said. There’s nothing like a little Triple Delight and fried rice to make a girl feel better about life. But then the food arrived, and instead of the Triple Delight I ordered, I got the “homestyle tofu.” Who the hell eats tofu anymore, anyway? (Jess, don’t say it! Don’t say it!)

I had the permanent crown glued back in at 4:00. I guess it rained during the 15 minutes I was in the chair, because I walked out to a steam bath. Just wish me luck that the crown stays in this time. And two hours later, the layer of steam hanging about 3 feet off the ground is. still. there.

Did I mention I’m looking for a new dentist??

So, here I am, sitting here whining, and feel free to tell me to zip it.

I saw a few headlines today that caught my eye.

From MSNBC.com: Tapped-out consumers weigh on recovery. It’s not that we don’t want that 50 inch 3D LCD tv, it’s that WE DON’T HAVE ANY MONEY, STUPID!

Another from MSNBC.com: Iranian Embassy denies widow to be stoned to death Once it got into the media and the human rights organizations started screaming, Iran backed down on the “death by stoning” penalty for an Iranian woman who was convicted of adultery. She’s already served 5 years and whipped with 99 lashes, so it’s good news that Iran won’t bury her in the ground up to her neck and let a bunch of losers with a death-lust and nothing better to do throw rocks at her until she dies of cerebral hemorrhage.

Again from MSNBC.com: BP: Early plugging of well in ‘perfect’ scenario Today a BP exec said that in a perfect scenario, they’ll have that well plugged by August. The problem is, nothing is ever “perfect.” There simply is no such thing as a “perfect” scenario.

More from MSNBC.com: U.S.: Russia to release 4 in swap over spies What century is this? I didn’t even know spy swaps still happened.

And finally, from MSNBC.com: Girl welcomed home after kidnapper kills self A 4 year old in Missouri was abducted by a convicted sex offender. He held for for 3 days, then did her, her family, and the world a favor by abandoning her and shooting himself to death. For once, we get a bit of good news. The little girl is alive, and her tormentor did what he should have done a long time ago.

Sounds like a helluva day. I hope your tooth issues are behind you! Muggy weather sucks, it’s hot here but usually dry so not as awful.
So Jess is a tofu person? Actually in the interests of full disclosure I’m a tofutarian too.And probably ate tofu before Jess did!
Like you said the media cheerleaders seem to think we’re all gonna race each other to the mall and begin buying again any day now.Just a matter of getting house prices to go up again, more construction and voila!
You know I’d checked into that Iran thing when CNN first ran it.Turned out they picked the story up from the Jerusalem Post who got it from her lawyer.
I dug around and found stoning was officially outlawed last year, not sure how frequently it had happened. The womans boyfriend killed her husband so both are facing the death penalty but not by stoning. It looked to me like it was a defense lawyer using the media to create pressure to spring his client. Plus she’s an Azerbaijani so there’s the ethnic deal.

Oscar Grant verdict just came down, cop shot him got involuntary manslaughter. Youngest kid and visiting nieces were headed that way, diverted them to Berkeley cause shopowners in Oakland boarding up their windows.Berkeley less likely to blow.

  3. Bee, condolences on a really lousy day. Having survived my share and then some, I can relate. Tofu? Ooh.

How encouraging, that Iran has actually outlawed the death-by-stoning tradition. Given how things work in that part of the world, it will still be quite some time before word gets around that it’s illegal and the new law is actually enforced, assuming it will be enforced. Even then, don’t be surprised if it takes a few decades before Iranians actually stop stoning people to death, whether it’s been made illegal or not. Old habits die hard, traditions even harder, especially where authoritarianism, misogyny, cruelty and killing are concerned.

Your day sucked to sum it up. Mine did to, While driving about an hour away from my dwelling, the brakes on my car went…brake line busted.. Melissa my wife was with me and is a basket case in a car.
Since I can’t walk to good anymore, I drove home to my son the Mechanic’s garage… all the way with no brakes… Got home and drank heavily. I just mention this not to have a pissing contest but to let you know I have empathy for you. Scotch works pretty good.

  5. Jess says:

Oh Bee, teeth pain, the WORST pain ever, I totally sympathize with you. Just get some super glue next time and stick it back in there. That was free advice from me, yer welcome. I don’t know if I should be pleased or crying with my name being mentioned and tofu in the same sentence. Everyone will now know I am a total DFH that eats all vegetarian all the time, slipping her way into total vegan. I didn’t say it, I bit my tongue and now it’s bleeding, are you happy with yourself now missy?

Oso, Oakland was not bad last night, some idiots tried to overturn a police car, but that was because someone thought a police officer had run over a woman’s foot on purpose. I went there to the 12th st station and Mayor Dellums and Oscar Grant’s family members were there calling for non violence. They set up microphones for people to vent about the verdict. I watched channel 7 last night and they were saying because of the additional gun charge, he may(Mehersle) get an additional 10 yrs because of it. During the day I had heard they might close BART and just go straight through without stopping in Oaktown but that never happened.

Why is it, we always are hearing about the woman being punished, never the guy? I read a story last night about a little girl that set herself on fire, because of the arranged marriage at 15 she had to endure. It has been happening more and more since we started our desert adventures. Which is another thing I have been thinking about, I was a teenager when they started and now I am in my late 20s. I wish in these countries, as well as our own here, women were held up with greater respect and being treated as equals to men. Once that happens, things will change, till then, we have to keep giving those women our voices because when they find their own, watch out it will be something to see. Witness all those women in the streets during the election in Iran during that green revolution last year.

  6. Truth 101 says:

I was noticing the similarities in the political right’s penchant in our country to pander to the extreme nutbag righties with ultra anti abortion rhetoric and anti immigrant, pro gun no matter what and overthrow the tyrant Obama bullshit, to Iran’s love of pandering to mysoginist assholes who want to stone women.

    (The bad stoning I mean)

  7. Tom Harper says:

I haven’t experienced any of those suffocating humid summers for several decades, but your description brought it all back. Connecticut doesn’t get as hot as Virginia, but that F%&$#! humidity [gasp] I didn’t even know how much I hated it ’til I ended up in California and discovered there’s a place where you can actually move and breathe when the weather gets hot. The old “dry heat” cliche is true.

Osiro: Federal prosecutors are taking over that Oakland murder case now. That cop needs some serious jail time; involuntary manslaughter doesn’t cut it.

  8. osori says:

    Jess,
I agree wholeheartedly. Women are strong and smart and tough and we (men, but the Phylis Schafly types buy in)force them down. We are better here than many other places but we still do it.

The media/political types are pro-women when it suits them. We have decided to make Iran our enemy for a lot of reasons, so we hear about how badly they treat women. Yet in Iran women vote and work and attend higher education. Not near enough yeah, but not like Egypt or Saudi Arabia where women can’t even drive cars.

I did my best to raise two proud strong women, maybe we as a race will eventually treat all humans equally. Not just the ones who stand when they pee.

  9. T. Paine says:

Bee, I am indeed sorry to hear about your bad day yesterday. Hopefully today is proving to be better.

I used to live in Virginia (Chester area) and then in North Carolina back in the 90’s. I loved much about the south but never ever got used to the humidity. You have my sympathy, ma’am!

Jess and Osori, I agree with both of you regarding the continued need to support women and their rights throughout the world, especially in the Middle East. As a father of three daughters, this is especially important to me!

  10. Jess says:

@ Oso, Not all men Oso, and if it came across that way from me, that really isn’t my intent. All of us are entitled to not be held down, male and female. I am just happy we wimmin are now coming into our own and all I can say is watch out when some of us get more power :) . Things will change and people should get ready for it. You can see it happening already and you can almost taste the fear from some of the unelightened among us, that fear the change and fear the unkown. Aw hell who am I kidding, they fear their shadows because they think it is some kind of Satanic thing because it is so dark.

  11. Jess, I know you meant well, and were probably kidding, but Super Glue contains chemicals that are safe for living things, especially human consumption. The dentist who put the cap on should do it right, at no additional charge.

  12. Rats. In the previous comment I meant to say “chemicals that are not safe. (Bee, the WP Ajax Edit Comment editing plug-in is a godsend for tangle-fingered typists like me. Hint, hint.)

  13. Well, mi lady, that was some kind of day. Sometimes they just happen along like that, starting out bad and getting worse as the day goes by. Put one foot down and step on it withthe other. With my dental phobia I would have tossed that baby in the trash and said the hell with it.

  14. Oso: The tooth, so far, is staying put. I’m glad to hear that stoning was outlawed in Iran…very glad indeed. They’ve got a hell of a long way to go, but that’s a start. The middle east in general isn’t a very good place for a woman to exist. I don’t think things blew up in Oakland, did they? I saw something about it today, and it looked like everyone stayed relatively calm.

SW: Thanks, dearie. Now of course I have a sinus infection from the freaking mold in this state, but it’s just been one of those weeks, ya’know?

Tim: Whoa, busted break lines are never good. You’re a lucky man, though, to have a mechanic in the family!

Jess: the good thing is there is no pain…but it’s annoying as hell. True story: I’ve been to the dentist about 7 or 8 times since mid March, for 2 different teeth. I had occasion to just drive past the dentist office about 3 weeks ago – just driving past, mind you, not stopping, no appointment, no going in. Anyway, so I’m driving past, realize where I was and my mouth went numb. No shit, true story. And dearie, you know I love you like my luggage, so don’t take umbrage at me outing you :)

Truth101: Ya got a point there, darlin’, you most surely do have a point there.

Tom Harper: We got a little break today – it’s in the 80’s, we had some light rain this morning, and the sun has only peeked out a couple of times. I reckon it goes right back to “hotter than hell in a heatwave” next week.

    T. Paine: Thanks. Funny small world, ain’t it? I live just 15 miles or so (probably 10 as the crow flies) from Chester. Well acquainted with it. T, you have some funny ideas sometimes, but what you said about women above – I’m glad you said that :)

SW & Jess: Oh, don’t worry, folks, I didn’t get charged for the fix…trust me, that would NEVER happen with the Bee. They might try, but it won’t ever happen, lol. Don’t worry about the superglue thing, SW…I won’t be trying it anytime soon. Although I was tempted to do exactly what Leslie recommended… :)

  15. osori says:

So Jess not only eats tofu but she also takes umbrage? What more dark secrets lurk within that troubled psyche? Yoo-Hoo drinker..soccer fan..civil war buff..fantasy football..human sacrifice-so much choice of reprehensible activity, so little time.

  16. T. Paine says:

Bee, I don’t know if it is still there, but there was a bar called “Crossflights” that had lots of dart boards, pool tables, and great burgers in Chester. That used to be the hang out for me and Mrs. Paine.

As for womenfolk, I suspect many would still consider me old fashioned-bordering-on-chauvistic in some regards. I think men should treat women respectfully as protectively in most regards.

Women absolutely should be able to do whatever they desire job-wise, and absolutely receive equal pay for equal work.

My old fashioned ideas come in to play where I don’t think women should be police or firemen or serve in combat roles in the armed forces. This isn’t out of disrespect for women, but rather because of my respect for them in general and the seemingly now antiquated ideal of western society at one time putting great value on protecting our women and children. It strikes me as sad that society has coarsened and our respect for people, especially women, has been part of that result in my opinion.

  17. T. Paine, I’m not familiar with Crossflights, but there is a pool/darts bar near the courthouse called “Murphy’s Law”, and they used to make a mean tuna-melt, until they changed management. Ah, well, nothing lasts forever. I just pulled a google, and it seems that Crossflights is still there and open for business :)

  18. TomCat says:

Your tofu may have been a blessing for me, as the triple-delight may well have contained one of my kitty relatives. ;-)

  19. A home is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.
